SEO & AEO Case Study

How a 6-Day-Old Blog Post Got Cited by Google’s AI Overview

From building IQPRO Real Estate’s digital marketing function.

In short

A newly published, tightly focused IQPRO page, answering one question and marked up with FAQ schema, went from absent to Google’s #1 organic result and a cited source inside the AI Overview for the query “ISO certified real estate in Dubai” within six days. The lesson: answer engine optimization (AEO) works when it sits on top of solid SEO, not instead of it.

Most AI SEO case studies start with a bold claim. This one starts with a correction.

When I began researching the query “ISO certified real estate in Dubai,” I assumed IQPRO might be one of the few agencies with content on the topic. After investigating the results, I found several established competitors making the same claim, some for more than 15 years. That made the result more interesting, not less.

The experiment: one page, one question

IQPRO had recently achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification, but no page explained what that actually meant for buyers, sellers, and investors. Instead of adding a sentence to the homepage, I published a dedicated article answering a single question:

What does IQPRO’s ISO 9001:2015 certification mean for clients?

The article was intentionally focused on one topic and included FAQ schema to structure the content.

The result: from absent, to source, to #1

Here is the progression across six days of searching the same query.

Google AI Overview for ISO certified real estate in Dubai on 16 July, IQPRO absent while nine other sites are cited

16 July: IQPRO is absent. Google’s AI Overview cites 9 other sites.

Google AI Overview on 17 July showing IQPRO Real Estate highlighted as a cited source for ISO certified real estate in Dubai

17 July: IQPRO now appears as a cited source in the AI Overview.

Google search on 21 July: the IQPRO blog post ranks number one organic and is cited in the AI Overview for ISO certified real estate in Dubai

21 July: the IQPRO article ranks #1 organic and is the top-cited source in the 8-site AI Overview.

The AI Overview isn’t consistent. It appears, disappears, and rewrites across searches, which is normal. So the claim isn’t that IQPRO permanently won the AI Overview. It’s that a newly published page moved from unlisted, to cited source, to the #1 organic result, within days of going live.

Why I think it happened

I don’t think there’s one explanation. Several factors may have contributed.

  • The page answered one specific question, rather than burying certification inside a broad homepage.
  • The content was clearly structured and included FAQ schema. Whether that directly influenced the AI Overview can’t be proven from one experiment.
  • It’s a highly specific query. Thousands of Dubai brokerages exist, but few publicly reference ISO certification, a far smaller competitive field.
  • No independent source maintains a definitive list of ISO-certified Dubai agencies, so the AI Overview appears to synthesize first-party sources.

What this proves — and what it doesn’t

  • What it shows: a newly published, narrowly focused page became a cited AI Overview source, and the #1 organic result, for a competitive query in under a week.
  • Be careful claiming: that FAQ schema caused it. It may have helped Google understand the page, but one experiment can’t isolate the cause, and it’s a small field of roughly seven to eight firms.
  • Never overstate: AI Overviews shift by search and session and can attach claims your own site doesn’t support. Being named is not a permanent placement, nor a guarantee of accuracy.

My biggest takeaway

AI Overviews don’t replace SEO. They build on it.

The page still had to be crawlable, indexable, technically sound, and capable of ranking organically before Google’s AI system could use it. SEO earned the visibility. AEO may have shaped when Google chose to use the content. This is the same full-funnel thinking I cover in Why Your Marketing Isn’t Working.

The next step is to repeat this on a far more competitive query. If it holds there, the hypothesis gets stronger. If it doesn’t, that’s equally useful: it defines where this approach works, and where it doesn’t.

This case study documents an ongoing experiment based on observations from July 2026. I’ll update these findings as I test similar approaches across different search environments.

FAQ

How do you get cited in Google’s AI Overview?

In this case, the page did three things: it answered one specific question directly, it was structured clearly with FAQ schema, and it ranked organically first. That combination, strong answer engine optimization layered on solid SEO, is what let Google’s system select it as a source.

What is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content so AI-powered search results, like Google’s AI Overview, select your page as a source when answering a question.

AEO vs SEO: how are they different?

SEO competes for ranked links on a results page. AEO competes to be the source the AI reads out in its direct answer, above the links.

What is FAQ schema and why does it matter for AI Overviews?

FAQ schema is structured data that explicitly labels the questions and answers on a page in a format search engines trust. It can increase the chance an AI answer engine lifts and attributes your answer.

How long does it take to appear in an AI Overview?

It can take months, but for a specific, low-competition question answered with clean structured data, it can happen in days. In this case, six.
